Conferences

The UTHSC Pediatric Residency Program hosts several conferences for resident education, all of which are protected educational time.

Inpatient Morning Report (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, 7:30am-8am)

Teams participate in small and large group learning on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. The supervisors lead "chalk talks" and case discussions with their teams on Mondays. Once every four weeks morning report is led by one of our subspecialists. On Tuesdays, the new attending reviews expectations and has a case discussion with the team. On Thursdays, we do a large group morning report led by one of our chief residents. The chiefs walk through a board question and the teams can win points for their respective cohorts.

Outpatient Morning Report (Wednesday 7:30am-8am)

Case based discussion of common outpatient complaints and topics, focusing on the social determinants of health. Review data from the national, state, and local level as well as discussion of local resources available to our patients.

Grand Rounds

Grand Rounds is an interdisciplinary lecture held weekly about various topics and is open to the entire hospital. It is from 8-9am on Wednesdays. For access to the Grand Rounds password, please email physicians@lebonheur.org or call 866.870.5570.

Academic Half Days (Thursday for Seniors, Friday for Interns, 1pm-4pm)

Rotating monthly topics with board relevant topics. Separating by level of training allows for more specific teaching. Intern lectures are typically more foundational and introductory, with senior lectures more application and therapeutic based. Each month wraps up with a jeopardy review game led by chief residents to review the board relevant topics discussed over the past month. July Intern AHD is “intern school” focusing on key foundational topics and skills needed to succeed in intern year. These topics include newborn physical exam, documentation 101, and reading CXR and KUBs. See below for an example schedule!

Noon Lectures (twice a month, Thursday or Friday prior to academic half day)

Bimonthly lectures with a rotating curriculum of QI M&M, M&M, Advocacy, Professors Rounds and Housestaff conferences from chief residents to give important program updates, share ongoing QI projects, and award resident of the month honors.

Board Review Series (Fridays 12pm-1pm starting in January for graduating residents)

Weekly lectures hosted by subspecialty attendings and fellows to review board questions, give tips for test taking, and provide useful pearls. These lectures are recorded and made available to residents to review on their own as they prepare for boards.

Resident as Teachers

Residents as Teachers is integrated with our Academic Half Day curriculum and is specifically addressed to our pediatric and med-ped residents towards the end of their PGY1 year.  Our residents have the opportunity during upper level to teach and supervise interns, medical students, and junior interns, and this curriculum is intended to provide tools to the residents as they prepare to be effective supervisors.  Topics focus on effective feedback and creating a psychologically safe / cohesive team environment and is primarily led by our pediatric chief residents.

Career Development Workshop

Career Development Workshop is also integrated with our Academic Half Day and is given during the spring of PGY2.  The workshop focuses on both residents planning to move on to outpatient pediatric careers and to residents preparing for fellowship application.  Topics include CV preparation, fellowship application / interviewing, and panel discussions with both outpatient pediatrician graduates and with fellowship leadership.

Inpatient Simulation

Monthly, residents on the inpatient service will participate in mock code events facilitated by our Pediatric Emergency Medicine faculty. These cases involve scenarios where patients have arrived to the floor or may have acutely decompensated and help residents think through the ways they may need to escalate care on kids they may not know as well. These are for all levels of learners and we even have some of our hospitalists attendings join in!
