Robert E. Merritt, MD, MBA

On Oct. 22, Dr. Robert E. Merritt, Professor and Director in the Division of Thoracic Surgery at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus, OH, served as the 2025 UT Health Science Center Visiting Professor in Thoracic Surgery. He spoke on the topic, “Robotic Esophagectomy: Present Developments and Future Direction.”
Tyler Hughes, MD, FACS

On April 30, Dr. Hughes, Professor and Dean, University of Kansas, School of Medicine-Salina, Vice-President Elect of the Association College of Surgeons and inaugural chair of the ACS Advisory Council for Rural Surgery, was welcomed as the 2025 UT Health Science Center Global Surgery Institute Visiting Professor. He lectured on the topic, “Lessons from American Rural Surgery for the Whole World.”
Casey Calkins, MD

On May 21, Dr. Calkins, Professor of Pediatric Surgery at The Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee,
WI, served as the 2025 UT Health Science Center Visiting Professor in Pediatric Surgery. He lectured on the topic, “Congenital Pulmonary Lesions: Past and Future.”
Kelly Hunt, MD, FACS, FSSO

On June 13, Dr. Hunt, Professor and Chair, Department of Breast Surgical Oncology, MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, TX and immediate past-President of the Society of Surgical Oncology, served as the 2025 Harwell Wilson Surgical Society Distinguished Visiting Professor. She presented on the topic, “Foundations and Frontiers in Breast Cancer Clinical Trials.”
Matthew A. Steliga, MD

On June 13, Dr. Steliga, Kent C. Westbrook Distinguished Chair in Surgical Oncology and Chief of Thoracic Surgery at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine in Little Rock, AR served as the 2025 Harwell Wilson Surgical Society Alumni Speaker. He delivered a lecture titled, “Grow Where You Are Planted: Adaptation, Flexibility, Resilience.”
Marion C.W. Henry, MD, MPH, FACS, FAAP

On Feb. 5, Dr. Henry, Professor of Surgery in the Division of Pediatric Surgery at the University of Chicago in Chicago, IL, was welcomed as the UT Health Science Center Association of Women Surgeons Visiting Professor. She lectured on the topic, “Pediatric Surgery Advocacy: Raising our Voices for the Future.”

On Aug. 28, Dr. John Stewart, Professor and Chair, Department of Surgery at Morehouse School of Medicine, was welcomed as the department’s Access and Engagement Visiting Professor. He lectured on the topic, “Achieving Health Equity in Surgical Oncology in the Pursuit of Health Justice.”

On Sept. 4, Belinda Dickie, MD, Assistant Professor, Pediatric Surgery at Harvard Medical School and co-Director, Colorectal and Pelvic Malformation at Boston Children’s Hospital, served as a UT Health Science Center Visiting Lecturer in Pediatric Surgery. She presented on the topic, “The Evolution of Congenital Colorectal Reconstruction-Function Follow Form.”

On Oct. 3, Jessica Zagory, MD, Professor of Clinical Surgery, Division of Pediatric Surgery, Associate Program Director, General Surgery Residency at LSU Health, New Orleans, LA, served as the Society of Asian Academic Surgeons Visiting Lecturer. She presented on the topic, “Medical Needs and Legal Rights of Justice-Involved Children.”
Julia F. Corcoran, MD

On Oct. 30, the Department of Surgery welcomed Julia Corcoran, MD, Professor and Program Director of the Plastic Surgery Residency at the University of Illinois in Chicago, IL as the UT Health Science Center Visiting Professor in Plastic Surgery. She lectured on the topic, “Helping Good Learners with Test Taking Issues.”

On April 24, the Department of Surgery welcomed Leigh Neumayer, MD, MS, MBA, FACS, Professor and Chair, Department of Surgery at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Jacksonville, FL as the Women in Surgery Visiting Professor. She spoke on the topic, “So, you want to be a leader: Lessons Learned from a Path less Traveled.”

On May 29, Marjorie J. Arca, MD served as an invited Grand Rounds Lecturer in Pediatrics Surgery. Arca is Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics, Division Chief of Pediatrics at the University of Rochester Medical Center. She is the Surgeon-in-Chief at Golisano Children’s Hospital in Rochester, NY. She presented on the topic, “The Road Less Travelled: The Journey of Women and Minorities in Academic Surgery.”

On June 14, the Department of Surgery hosted Herbert Chen, MD, FACS, Fay Flectcher Kerner Endowed Chair in Surgery, Professor and Chair, Department of Surgery, University of Alabama in Birmingham, AL as the HWSS Distinguished Visiting Professor. Chen presented on the topic “Building a Team-Oriented Culture.”
