November 15 Application Deadline

Committee

The responsibility of the selection of students, for admission to the College of Medicine is delegated to the Committee on Admissions by the Executive Dean of the UTHSC College of Medicine under the authority of the Board of Trustees of the University. The Admissions Committee is charged with selecting those applicants who are deemed to be the most highly qualified for the study and practice of medicine. The Admissions Committee also establishes standards for admission to the College, these standards to be approved by the College of Medicine, the Administration of The UT Health Science Center and the University Board of Trustees.

The members of the Committee on Admissions are broadly based in the academic and medical communities. Representation includes: members of both clinical and basic medical science faculty in the College of Medicine, practicing physicians from across the state and medical students from the junior and senior classes. Members are appointed to the Committee by the Executive Dean of the UTHSC College of Medicine. The Medicine Admissions Office supports this role through:

  • advising prospective students
  • providing guided tours on interview days
  • managing the processing of application materials
  • screening applications as received
  • notifying applicants of interviews
  • counseling unsuccessful applicants

Counseling

The bulk of the counseling of applicants and liaison with undergraduate colleges regarding details of application procedures, time schedules, standard course requirements, supporting credentials and other matters of a routinely recurring nature are handled by the College of Medicine Admissions Office. This activity occurs both in the form of personal appointments and by correspondence.
