There are a variety of scholarships, including need-base and merit-base grants and
scholarships, available for both incoming and current medical students in the College
of Medicine. Many of these scholarships are processed and approved by the College
of Medicine Scholarship Committee. Others, including all need-base grants and scholarships,
are handled and processed by the Financial Aid Office in consultation with the College
of Medicine.
In order for a scholarship to be awarded, students must complete the scholarship survey,
which is located under the Financial Aid tab in the Banner System. Students will also
need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
The following are merit-based scholarships offered to incoming medical students. Students
are nominated for these awards by the Admissions Committee. Students are selected
prior to matriculation by the College of Medicine Admissions Committee. The scholarship's
renewal for all four years is contingent upon the student continuing to demonstrate
the qualities outlined in the award. These include keeping a minimum GPA of 3.0, and
demonstrating professionalism and leadership. The number of awards given is contingent
on available funds. No application required.

George E. Bradford ScholarshipSelection based primarily on scholastic ability and dedication to the health sciences
as a career and profession. Amount and duration of award determined by committee.
Only students enrolled and in good academic standing shall be eligible to receive
or continue to receive a Bradford Scholarship.
Holman Merit ScholarshipAwarded once every four years, the scholarship is for up to full tuition and fees.
Family involvement; provisions for additional funds made at time of selection. Given
to an incoming Merit Finalist. Family wants interaction with recipient during and
after medical school and will add the funds at the beginning of each term/year to
cover full tuition/fees.
James and Catherine Waters Memorial ScholarshipAwarded to one student per year in the sum of $6,000 on the basis of merit only. After
selection, the Donors shall be apprised of the name, address, and other pertinent
information concerning the recipient.
Louis Killeffer Merit ScholarshipAmount and duration of award determined by committee. Students must have excelled
scholastically and be nominated at the time of their medical school interview. They
must demonstrate leadership potential, further scholastic ability, a commitment to
medicine and have outstanding personal qualities.
Dr. W. H. Pistole ScholarshipStudents receive $25,000 per year for four years, 2-3 awards can be given each year
depending on availability of funds. Students must have excelled scholastically and
be nominated at the time of their medical school interview. They must demonstrate
leadership potential, further scholastic ability, a commitment to medicine and have
outstanding personal qualities.
Alumni Merit ScholarshipAn incoming student may be awarded $12,500 each year. Students must have excelled
scholastically and be nominated at the time of their medical school interview. They
must demonstrate leadership potential, further scholastic ability, a commitment to
medicine and have outstanding personal qualities.
Andrew D. Holt ScholarshipStudents receive up to $7,000 each (as funds are available). Students must have excelled
scholastically and be nominated at the time of their medical school interview. They
must demonstrate leadership potential, further scholastic ability, a commitment to
medicine and have outstanding personal qualities.
Letitia G. Doggett ScholarshipStudents receive up to $25,000 each for four years. Students receiving these scholarships
must be incoming students with demonstrated leadership potential, scholastic ability,
have good academic standing, a commitment to medicine, and outstanding personal qualities.
Robert L. Summitt, MD Alumni Merit ScholarshipStudents receive $25,000, will be given each year for four years. Students must have
excelled scholastically and be nominated at the time of their medical school interview.
They must demonstrate leadership potential, further scholastic ability, a commitment
to medicine and have outstanding personal qualities.
Arthur R. Porter Memorial Scholarship
Students receive up to $3,000 each for one year. Scholarships are for incoming students
who demonstrate leadership potential, scholastic ability, a commitment to medicine,
and outstanding personal qualities.
The following awards are given preferentially to students from diverse backgrounds
(as defined in the UTHSC's Diversity Statement), i.e., those students in the opinion
of the Admission's Committee whose presence in medical school will enhance the experience
of all students. The student is eligible for this award for four years of study. For
a description, click the name of the scholarship.
The following awards are given to enrolled students who demonstrate the qualities
outlined in the fund's Memorandum. A Scholarship Selection Committee meets annually
to award these scholarships. "Merit" is based on Cumulative GPA to date. "Financial
Need" is based on a financial profile from the Financial Aid Office. The number of
awards given is contingent upon available funds.
College of Medicine General ScholarshipAwards given to students either admitted to or enrolled to the UTHSC College of Medicine.
Awards may be one-time or recurring and may be based on either merit or need.
College of Medicine Faculty ScholarshipAwarded to a student or students identified by UTHSC College of Medicine faculty and
the Scholarship Selection Committee as having strong academic performance. Financial
need may also be considered and a student or students may receive the award in more
than one year.
Sam Houston Sanders Scholarship
Awarded annually to multiple students who are enrolled at or admitted to the UTHSC
College of Medicine. Preference shall be given to students who have achieved at a
high academic caliber, and financial need may also be taken into consideration.
Ed Reed ScholarshipFive students receive $10,000 each preferentially to students from diverse backgrounds
(as defined in UTHSC's Diversity Statement). Students may be admitted to or already
enrolled at the UTHSC College of Medicine and both exceptional academic performance
and financial need shall be key considerations for scholarship selection. A student
holding this scholarship in one year shall have preference in subsequent years.
Julian G. Fleming M.D. ScholarshipApplicants must be currently enrolled at or admitted to the UTHSC College of Medicine
and financial need is the key consideration for this scholarship while academic performance
will also be taken into consideration. A student holding this scholarship in one year
shall have preference in subsequent years.
Albert and Elizabeth Grobmyer ScholarshipAwarded to students admitted to or already enrolled at UTHSC College of Medicine.
Student or students receiving scholarship must have demonstrated exceptional academic
performance and they must have a parent or legal guardian who earned a medical degree
from an accredited allopathic medical school.
The Kerlan Family ScholarshipAwarded to students who have completed at least their first year of medical school
at the UTHSC College of Medicine. Student or students must demonstrate exceptional
academic performance, performing at the top half of their medical class. Financial
need should also be a key consideration. Preference should bel given to medical students
who have expressed an interest in pursuing careers in general surgery or internal
medicine. Preference shall also be given to students who are Tennessee residents and
have expressed a desire to practice medicine in the state of Tennessee. A student
or students holding this scholarship in one year shall hlave preference in subsequent
years.
Richard and Christi Hopper ScholarshipAn award of up to $2,500 to a student already enrolled or admitted to the UTHSC College
of Medicine. Exceptional academic performance and financial need should both be considered
for this scholarship. A student holding this scholarship in one year shall have preference
in subsequent years.
William and Mary McPeake ScholarshipAn award of approximately $1,250 given to a student or students already enrolled or
admitted to the UTHSC College of Medicine. Exceptional academic performance and financial
need should both be considered for this scholarship. A student holding this scholarship
in one year shall have preference in subsequent years.
The Robin M. Dodd ScholarshipAn award of $1,000 given to a student who is already enrolled or admitted to the UTHSC
College of Medicine. The student must demonstrate exceptional academic performance
and financial need should also be taken into consideration. Preference shall be given,
if possible, to applicants who are from rural areas of the state of Tennessee. A student
holding this scholarship in one year shall have preference in subsequent years.
Fred and Vicky Gregg ScholarshipAn award of up to $1,500-$3,000 to a student already enrolled or admitted to the UTHSC
College of Medicine. Exceptional academic performance and financial need should both
be considered for this scholarship. A student holding this scholarship in one year
shall have preference in subsequent years.
Dr. Hershel P. Wall ScholarshipAn award given to a student or students already enrolled or admitted to the UTHSC
College of Medicine. Exceptional academic performance and financial need should both
be considered for this scholarship. A student holding this scholarship in one year
shall have preference in subsequent years.
R. Lee and Bette T. Winchester Memorial ScholarshipA one-time award of $1,000-$3,000 given to a student or students who have already
completed their first year of medical and are entering their M2 year at the UTHSC
College of Medicine. Exceptional academic performance during the M1 year and financial
need should both be considered for this scholarship.
Karl Schledwitz "Monogram Service" AwardOne-time award of approximately $1,250 given to a student entering their M4 year having
completed their M3 year. Exceptional community service and/or work with patients during
clinical rotations determines the recipient.
Martin Grusin "Hardship" AwardOne-time award of approximately $1,250 given to a student entering M3 year having
completed their M2 year. Recipient shall have performed outstandingly despite a personal,
financial (large financial need), or physical hardship.
Peggy Dawson ScholarshipAn award given to a student or students already enrolled or admitted to the UTHSC
College of Medicine. Exceptional academic performance and financial need should both
be considered for this scholarship. A student holding this scholarship in one year
shall have preference in subsequent years.
Leela B. Sud, M.D. Memorial ScholarshipOne-time award is given to a student or students who are already enrolled at the UTSHC
College of Medicine and are beginning their M3 third year of medical school. Recipient(s)
must have shown exceptional academic performance during their first two years of medical
school. Preference shall be given to a student or students who meet these criteria
and are also interested in pursuing a career in psychiatry. The Scholarship Selection
Committee and the Department of Psychiatry will assist in the identification of such
a student. The minimum amount for this award will be $2,000 (if less is available
to be awarded, it is to be saved and awarded the following next year).
Roane County Medical Society ScholarshipAwarded to residents of Roane and Anderson Counties in TN, on the basis of financial
need and scholastic attainment. Should an eligible and deserving recipient not be
found in Roane or Anderson Counties in TN, scholarships may be awarded to eligible
and deserving students residing anywhere in the State of Tennessee. Notify President
of Roane/Anderson County Medical Society of the names/amounts of the awards.
Rona Jefferson Scholarship FundStudents receive up to $3,500 each. Students receiving these scholarships must be
current students, have good academic standing and demonstrate a commitment to medicine.
J. W. Erwin Scholarship FundQualified students receive $2,000-5,000. Students receiving these scholarships must
have demonstrated an interest in public health and be in good academic standing.
Montgomery ScholarshipStudents receive up to $3,000 each. Award is based on good academic standing, a commitment
to medicine, and financial need.
Ousley Memorial ScholarshipStudents receive up to $2,000 each. Students receiving these scholarships must be
current students, have demonstrated scholastic ability, and a commitment to medicine.
Albright Armstrong Rice ScholarshipStudents receive up to $2,000 each. Students receiving these scholarships must be
current students, be in good academic standing, and demonstrate a commitment to medicine.
Chisolm-Phi Rho Sigma FundStudents receive $2,000 each. Students receiving these scholarships must be current
students, be in good academic standing, and demonstrate a commitment to medicine.
Leon T. Banakas Scholarship FundStudents receive up to $2,000 each. Students receiving these scholarships must be
current students, be in good academic standing, and demonstrate a commitment to medicine.
Robert Lee Hyder Scholarship Students receive up to $1,000 each. Scholarships available to current students only,
who are in good academic standing.
Medicine Class of 1959Students receive up to $1,000 each ($2,000 annually). Students receiving these scholarships
must be current students only, in good academic standing, and have a commitment to
medicine.
Reuben B. Rasar Scholar FundAn annual award of up to $1,000. Students receiving this scholarship must be current
students in good academic standing. Previous holder preference.
Hardy and Cora Lee Graham ScholarshipRecipients shall be selected on the basis of financial need, merit and dedication
to medicine. Preference shall be given to medical students from upper West Tennessee,
with priority to Lake, Obion and Weakley counties. Preference shall also be given
to students who plan to return to upper West Tennessee to practice.
Vinsant Family Scholarship Fund
Students receive up to $1,000 each. Students receiving these scholarships must be
current students in good academic standing, with a demonstrated commitment to medicine.
Harold H. Fry Family Scholarship Students receive up to $2,000. Students receiving this scholarship must be current
students with an interest in public health, and be in good academic standing.
James L. Glass Memorial ScholarshipStudents receive up to $2,000. Students receiving this scholarship must be current
students with demonstrated scholastic ability, and be in good academic standing.
Stern Merit Scholarship FundStudents receive up to $4,000 each. Students receiving these scholarships must be
current students with a demonstrated commitment to medicine, and scholastic ability.
Preference given to students who are underrepresented minorities as defined by the
UTHSC's Diversity Statement.
Joseph Napoleon Mitchell and Nancy Harris Students receive up to $2,000 each. Students receiving these scholarships must be
current students with a demonstrated scholastic ability, a commitment to medicine,
and be in good academic standing.
Ephraim and Ruth Camp Merit ScholarshipStudents receive up to $3,000 each ($126,000 annually). Students receiving these scholarships
may be incoming or current students. Merit- based; students in good academic standing,
demonstrated scholastic ability.
Grace Moulder Merit Scholarship Students receive up to $2,000. Students receiving these scholarships must be current
students with demonstrated scholastic ability, a commitment to medicine, and be in
good academic standing.
Charles J. Deere Merit ScholarshipStudents receive up to $2,000. Students receiving these scholarships must be current
students with demonstrated scholastic ability, leadership ability, a commitment to
medicine, and be in good academic standing.
Dr. Carolyn Benthall '77 Memorial Endowed Students receive up to $2,000. Students receiving these scholarships must be current
students with demonstrated scholastic ability, a commitment to medicine, be in good
academic standing, and financial need. Merit-based.
Margaret-Overton Miller Scholarship Student receive up to $2,000. Students receiving these scholarships must be incoming
students, with demonstrated scholastic ability, and a commitment to medicine.
Dorothy Snider Scholarship AwardStudents eligible for
this award should be receiving other scholarships and this fund will match an amount up to that
award. The awards are up to $7,000. It was Dorothy Snider's intent that awardees be
aware of her expressed wish that the amount of this grant be donated back to the fund,
at a time of their convenience, to ensure its perpetuity and to benefit future medical
students.
AMA Scholars Fund Selection is made from the graduation class by the Dean/Dean's Designee on behalf
of the College of Medicine Scholarship Committee. Funds are provided by the AMA Alliance
and are awarded in the amount of $5,000 each. The number of awards given is determined
by the availability of funds.
Bland W. Cannon, M.D. Scholarship Cannon ScholarsThe Cannon family, in honor of Dr. Bland Cannon, has established a fund that recognizes
third-year medical students for scholarship, humanism and professionalism. Students
are nominated by their peers and faculty. The Cannon Selection Committee chooses 4-5
students for the award of $4,000-5,000.
Albert M. Hand, M.D., Scholarship Hand ScholarsThe Hand family, in honor of Dr. Albert Hand, has established a fund that recognizes
third-year medical students for scholarship, humanism and professionalism. Students
are nominated by their peers and faculty. The Hand Selection Committee chooses three
students for the award of $5,000.
Earl and Virginia Hord ScholarshipAn award given to a rising M3 student who will be attending the UTHSC College of Medicine-Knoxville
in Knoxville, TN for their M3 and M4 years of medical school. Recipient(s) must have
shown excellent academic performance during their first two years of medical school.
Financial need may also be a consideration for this scholarship. A student holding
the Hord Scholarship in their M3 year shall retain the scholarship during their M4
year provided they maintain excellent academic performance, including a 3.0 GPA and
outstanding clinical scores.
