Resident Life
Life in the UTHSC Anesthesiology Residency is a blend of rigorous clinical training, strong camaraderie, and memorable experiences that bring our residents together both inside and outside the hospital. Our program values wellness, teamwork, and community — and our resident activities throughout the year reflect that commitment.
Orientation
Our residency orientation is designed to welcome new residents into the Department of Anesthesiology and set the foundation for a successful and supportive training experience. During this introductory period, residents meet faculty and peers, receive essential program resources, spend some time in the CHIPS simulation lab, and become familiar with our clinical environments and expectations. It’s an exciting time to build community, ask questions, and start the journey toward becoming a confident and compassionate anesthesiologist.

Research & Scholarly Activity
Our residents proudly represent UTHSC at the American Society of Anesthesiologists Annual Meeting. They participate in workshops, present research, and network with anesthesiologists from across the country — gaining exposure to the latest innovations in the field.

CHIPS Simulation Center
Our residents benefit from dedicated 1:1 training session annually at UTHSC’s state‑of‑the‑art Center for Healthcare Improvement and Patient Simulation (CHIPS). In this immersive environment, residents work closely with faculty and simulation experts to practice procedures, sharpen clinical decision‑making, and build confidence using high‑fidelity manikins, standardized patients, and realistic clinical settings. These individualized sessions provide a supportive space to ask questions, refine skills, and receive focused feedback—helping residents grow into skilled, compassionate anesthesiologists while training in one of the region’s premier simulation centers.

Involved faculty
Our faculty are deeply committed to resident growth, offering consistent guidance, clinical teaching, and individualized mentorship throughout training. Residents benefit from approachable educators who invest in their success—providing support, feedback, and encouragement as they develop confidence and expertise in anesthesiology.

Department Get Togethers
Everyday moments like case discussions, holiday gatherings, meals shared, and spontaneous celebrations help make residency meaningful. Together, these experiences build the supportive, close‑knit environment our residents maintain.

Graduation
Graduation is one of the most meaningful events of the year. Residents, faculty, families, and friends come together to honor the hard work, resilience, and accomplishments of our graduating class. The ceremony highlights each resident’s journey and celebrates their transition into the next stage of their careers.
