UTHSC will train the next generation of Radiation Oncology leaders through a four-year residency training program satisfying the competencies outlined by ACGME. With rigorous hands-on teaching and case-based instruction, residents will be equipped with requisite and advanced knowledge of radiobiology, radiation physics, and clinical management of malignant and benign diseases treated with radiotherapy. Residents will develop competency in routine and specialized treatment techniques, external beam treatment, sealed and unsealed source radiotherapy, endocavitary, interstitial, intraoperative high-dose-rate brachytherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, stereotactic body radiotherapy, image-guided radiotherapy, proton beam radiotherapy, and concurrent chemo/immuno-radiotherapy.

Dedicated time and curriculum will be devoted towards mastery of the principles of holistic, patient-centered, multi-disciplinary cancer care, including treatment quality improvement, care process design, artificial intelligence/advanced data analytics, mobile health technology, patient safety, cancer equity, community-based care outreach, inclusivity, the process of care design/teamwork, and provider self-care. We embrace a fully modern, 21st Century approach to multidisciplinary cancer care, cultural sensitivity, use of educational technology, and participatory experience-based learning.

The program will provide comprehensive clinical training and will immerse residents in opportunities to participate and learn from the entire spectrum of clinical, translational, population health/cancer control, and bench-based research. Novel research opportunities in cancer care equity and population health will be the department’s calling card.

We aim to graduate skilled, confident, empathic, and influential radiation oncologists of the highest professional character to serve their patients and communities as “neighbors in need.” They will always be members of our Mid-Southern family, regardless of where they practice.
