Health Fee & Insurance Coverage

Info for UTHSC Students

All full-time UTHSC students participate in the Student Health Program, which provides primary care and behavioral health services offered by University Health Services. The UTHSC Student Health Program consists of two components: the Mandatory Health Fee and the Student Health Insurance Plan (UHCSR).

Mandatory Health Fee

The mandatory health fee assures the availability of accessible, high quality health care services on campus for all full-time UTHSC students. The mandatory health fee covers visits with physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and registered nurses at the University Health Services; evaluation, counseling and referral services with mental health professionals at the UHS; the availability of a physician and a mental health professional on-call when the offices are closed; health promotion programs and services; and public health surveillance care and services provided by University Health Services (UHS).

Health Insurance

In addition to the mandatory health fee, all UTHSC full-time students must have health insurance coverage for services such as visits to specialists, hospitalization, surgical procedures, diagnostic laboratory tests and x-rays, some immunizations, physical therapy, and prescription medications. These services are not covered by the mandatory health fee.

Services provided at UHS that are not covered by the mandatory fee are subject to an out of pocket expense or may be billed to insurance. UHS is able to bill your insurance for

services not covered by the student health fee. You will be responsible for your deductible, co-insurance, or out of pocket expenses if applicable.

You can enroll in the UTHSC Student Health Insurance Plan (United Healthcare Student Resources), or you can waive the health insurance if your own insurance plan meets University insurance criteria. Every year you must complete the online insurance process to enroll or waive. Requests to waive the UTHSC Student Health Insurance Plan (UHCSR) may be audited to assure compliance with University insurance criteria. If you choose to remain on your own health insurance, you are financially responsible for expenses not covered by your insurance plan or the mandatory health fee.
