UT Regional One Health Psychiatric Consultation-Liaison Service
The UT Regional One Health Psychiatric Consultation-Liaison Service, led by Dr. Cowan, is a dynamic and fast-paced service that provides critical patient care and essential training in consultation-liaison psychiatry to psychiatric residents, physician assistant students, and medical students. As a team, the Psychiatric Consultation-Liaison group works collaboratively and holistically with our medical colleagues to initiate prompt and evidence-based psychiatric treatment to patients who are admitted to the medical floors at Regional One Medical Center. Regional One Medical Center, a 300-bed hospital, has a unique place in the heart of Memphis, offering a level-1 trauma center, high risk obstetrics treatment and a renowned burn center. The patient population we serve comes from varied backgrounds and has complex medical, social, and psychiatric needs. We see an array of psychiatric presentations including delirium, acute agitation from substance intoxication and decompensated psychosis in an acute medical setting. More specifically, as a trauma center we also manage the neuropsychiatric manifestations of traumatic brain and spinal injuries, stroke, complex orthopedic and burn traumas in patients.
In addition to the inpatient consultation-liaison service, we also supervise psychiatric services to our HIV population in the Adult Specialty Care Clinic with funding available from Ryan White Programs. This highly valued clinic provides case management, an onsite pharmacy, psychotherapy, and comprehensive medical services to ensure the health of this underserved population.
