Language and literacy development

Dr. Schwarz began her career at UT in 2002 as Head of the Department in Audiology & Speech Pathology. She retired in 2013 and has maintained employment in the department as a result of grant funding. Along with colleagues and students, her research explores components of the linguistic and cognitive foundations of reading comprehension with a particular focus on vocabulary, phonological awareness and spelling. These investigations involve individuals with typical hearing and those who are deaf or hard of hearing, as well as individuals with complex communication needs who benefit from the use of augmentative or alternative communication systems. This research is ultimately designed to create effective and efficient language and literacy assessments and interventions for young children and facilitate academic success. Dr. Schwarz has received an Editor’s Award from the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) for her published work and has been recognized as an ASHA Fellow.
