Donations to the Library

Thank you for considering a gift to the UTHSC Health Sciences Library. Donations help us maintain and enrich the quality of our collection and services. Because the University of Tennessee is a nonprofit organization, most gifts qualify for the charitable gift income tax deduction. There are a number of ways to give including:

Outright gifts of cash or securities

  • Pledges payable over 3-5 years
  • Gifts of real estate or other personal property
  • Planned gifts such as charitable remainder trusts and gift annuities
  • Books and nonprint materials (see below)
  • Items of historical interest

Planned gifts such as charitable remainder trusts and gift annuities have specific tax advantages and can provide lifetime income to you or your designated beneficiary. For further details, questions or to make a gift, contact the

Collection Materials

The Health Sciences Library only accepts gifts of books and nonprint materials that enhance the library’s collection and support curricular, clinical, and research needs in the health sciences. Newly published books, historical or rare materials, and autographed copies of books published or edited by University of Tennessee health sciences faculty members are especially welcome.

  • Serial (journal) donations are NOT usually accepted, unless specifically solicited by the library to fill gaps in the collection.
  • Prior to making an in-kind donation, please contact E-Services, 448-5406, so the need for the material can be determined. Providing an inventory is very helpful. Large collections may be assessed at their location.
  • Delivery of materials to the library is the responsibly of the donor. Include a note with the materials that includes your name, address, contact information, and the type and number of items given. All gifts are formally acknowledged by letter.
  • University of Tennessee policy and the Internal Revenue Service prohibit us from providing appraisals of gifts.
  • Donated material becomes the property of the library. For various reasons, donations may be recycled if not added to the permanent collection.

It may be more convenient and beneficial to consider donating books and journals to your local public library.  In Memphis, see http://www.memphislibrary.org/support/donate-books/
