Getting Started

Research involving the handling of radioactive materials or radiation-producing equipment must be reviewed and approved by the UTHSC RSC.

This includes work with x-rays, lasers (Class 3B and 4), magnetic fields (e.g., MRI) and radioactive materials.

Overview of First Steps

  1. Prepare a protocol for review by the UTHSC Radiation Safety Committee (RSC). Protocols must be prepared and submitted on iMedRIS.
  2. Prepare and attach an Animal Radiation Form if research involving radiation will include the use of animals.
  3. Receive protocol approval from the RSC.
  4. Ensure personnel complete radiation safety training.
  5. Have the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) commission the area where machine-produced radiation or radioactive materials will be used.
