Renal Transplantation Fellowship

The Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center are pleased to offer training in certification in Transplant Nephrology. This transplant nephrology fellowship program fulfills the requirements established by the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS) for individuals to stand as the approved transplant nephrologist for any program.

The training program, by offering a training experience formally certified by the ASN/AST Credentialing program, includes at least eight-month clinical experience in which the trainee will manage at least 30 renal transplant recipients as the primary care giver in both in- and outpatient settings, donor evaluation, pre-transplant and recipient evaluation, kidney graft biopsy, and all prominent features of the clinical experience.

The trainee is expected to manage immunosuppression, fluid-electrolyte balance, acid-base balance, blood pressure and glucose control, and anti-infective prophylaxis for all newly engrafted recipients.

One-Year Only Clinical Track

Detailed Rotation of the One-Year Clinical Track

  • 8 months clinical rotation (inpatient service and 1-2 clinic/week)
  • 1 month HLA lab rotation
  • 1 month pathology rotation (optional webinar or on site)
  • 1 month research rotation
  • 1 month vacation

Extra Scheduled Educational Activity

  • Core lecture presentation by attending: once a week. (title list of the core lectures)
  • Journal Club of LANDMARK paper: once a week. Goal is to discuss old, but LANDMARK paper of field of kidney transplantation.
  • Kidney biopsy conference: last Friday of each month
  • Transplant Journal Club: last second Friday of each month
  • Program and Fellow evaluation/feedback: every three months

Two-Year Combined Clinical and Research Track

This track allows the opportunity to obtain formal degree (Master of Epidemiology or Certificate in Clinical Investigation).

First Year

  • 6 months clinical rotation (inpatient and 1-2 clinic/week)
  • 1 month HLA lab rotation
  • 1 month pathology rotation (optional webinar or on site)
  • 1 month outpatient clinic rotation
  • 1 month vacation
  • 2 months research rotation (and studying for formal training if applicable)

Second Year

  • 3 months clinical rotation (inpatient and 1-2 clinic/week)
  • 8 months research rotation (and studying for formal training if applicable)
  • 1 month vacation

Details about Research Rotation

  • Thorough the entire time of research the fellow is expected to do: 1-2 outpatient clinic day/week
  • The fellow has to decide between two options:
    • basic research in Dr. Valeria Mas’s lab
    • clinical epidemiology in Dr. Miklos Z. Molnar’s lab 

In case the fellow decides to do clinical epidemiology option than the fellow has opportunity to obtain the following degrees (one of them):

Certificate in Clinical Investigation Program: This is a one year program. The program might contribute to cover the whole/part of the tuition fee.

Master Epidemiology – the fellow has opportunity to obtain a Master degree.  The program might contribute to cover the whole/part of the tuition fee.
