The Obesity Challenge

Integrating Best Practices into Culturally Competent, Family-Centered, Community Solutions

About this Course

Each module is designed to help participants look at obesity and overweight in children and adolescents through a public health focus on the family and community, not solely in individual behavioral terms.

The speakers, case study, and model programs will provide professionals with insight into developing and evaluating strategies that are grounded in an understanding of the effects of culture, education, poverty, community, and other external factors.

Each module is available with pre-approved professional Continuing Education credits for dietitians, occupational therapists, physical therapists, and health education specialists. Certificates of completion are available for other professionals.

Course Modules

  • Module 1 (3.5 hours) A Public Health Problem: Overweight and Obesity in Children and Adolescents. William Dietz, MD, PhD and David Mirvis, MD., Sarah Stender, MD, CDE.
  • Module 2 (3 hours) Start Where the People Are: The Importance of Understanding Culture in Health Promotion. Theodora Pinnock, MD and Pedro Velasquez, MD.
  • Module 3 (2.5 hours) Promoting Healthy Lifestyles to Prevent Obesity in the School Setting Dayle Hayes, MS, RD. Model school programs case study.
  • Module 4 (2.5 hours) Evidence-Based Research: Integrating Best Practices for Overweight into the Community Setting. Hollie Raynor, PhD, RD. Model program case study.

Continuing Education Accreditation

Continuing professional education is available for the following: Certified Health Education Specialists, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Registered Dietitians. All others will receive a Certificate of completion. There is no charge for this course.
