CITI Training

CITI is an online training platform that provides courses in biomedical and socio-behavioral research. These courses educate researchers about the ethical principles for working with human research subjects and the regulatory requirements for conducting research. Topics include concepts specific to types of research, roles in the protection of human subjects, informed consent, vulnerable populations, and data safety monitoring.

Online training courses MUST be completed by:

• anyone acting as an employee or agent of UTHSC — including faculty, staff, students, residents, or fellows — engaged in the conduct of human subject research (working directly with human subjects or with identifiable data or biological specimens)
• employees or agents conducting human subjects research at UTHSC partner institutions such as Campbell Clinic, Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, Methodist Healthcare – Memphis Hospitals, and Regional One Health
• research faculty advisors
• department chairs who approve/acknowledge research
• research administrators
• IRB board members and staff

UTHSC IRB approval of any new application, continuing review, or revision application is contingent upon training completion. 

Investigators, all key study personnel (including faculty advisors), and department chairs have two options:

1) Basic Human Subject Protections + Good Clinical Practice (Basic HSP + GCP) combination course (22 modules).  For recertification in three years, you will be required to take the entire course again. Research administrators, IRB chairs, IRB members, and IRB staff must take this combination course. 

OR

2) Human Subjects Training Basic Biomedical (Biomed) course (18 modules) plus GCP for Clinical Trials with Investigational Drugs and Medical Devices (U.S. FDA Focus) course (14 modules).

If you will be using a UT email

1. Go to https://www.citiprogram.org/
2. Click "Register" to obtain a username and password (if you are a new user)
3. Click “Select Your Organization Affiliation” 
4. Select "University of Tennessee Health Science Center - Memphis" as your organization affiliation and click continue
5. Complete the required registration fields and click “Log In with University of Tennessee Health Science Center – Memphis” via DUO [The DUO mobile app is the university's dual authentication system. You will need to install the app prior to logging into CITI through the institution.]
6. Select either: 
   1. Option 1:  Basic Human Subject Protections + Good Clinical Practice Combination Course  OR 
   2. Option 2: Human Subject Training Basic Biomedical (Biomed) course + GCP for Clinical Trials with Investigational Drugs and Medical Devices (U.S. FDA Focus) [Biomedical researchers may want to select this option if involved in a multicenter trial where the sponsor requires these  courses.]
7. Complete the required modules and any associated quizzes

If you will be using a non-UT email

1. Go to https://www.citiprogram.org/
2. Click "Register" to obtain a username and password (if a new user)
3. Select "University of Tennessee Health Science Center - Memphis" as your organization affiliation and click continue
4. Enter your personal information (first name, last name, email address) and click continue. NOTE:  Enter the email associated with your UTHSC NetID or iMedRIS account, so that CITI can automatically send UTHSC your training certificates.
5. Create a username, password and select a security question and click continue
6. Enter additional personal information (gender, ethnicity, etc.) and click continue
7. Select "No" regarding the option to receive "Continuing Education Unit Credit for Completed Courses" and click continue
8. Fill in all required information indicated by an *.
9. Select: 
   1. Option 1:  Basic Human Subject Protections + Good Clinical Practice Combination Course  OR 
   2. Option 2: Human Subject Training Basic Biomedical (Biomed) course + GCP for Clinical Trials with Investigational Drugs and Medical Devices (U.S. FDA Focus) [Biomedical researchers may want to select this option if involved in a multicenter trial where the sponsor requires these courses.]
10. Click "Complete Registration."
11. Select "Finalize registration."
12. Select the course you intend to complete (option 1 or 2)
13. Select "Complete the Integrity Assurance Statement before beginning the course."
14. Select "I agree" and click "Submit."
15. Complete the required modules and any associated quizzes

Each module may take from 10 –20 minutes depending on your knowledge and experience. You may take more than one session to complete the training. The course software will track your completed modules and save any module completions. To move forward to the next module, the quiz must be completed.

CITI certification is good for 3 years. 

CITI will send an automated notification 30 days prior to the expiration of training.

CITI will send an automated notification 30 days prior to your training expiration. To renew:

1. Go to https://www.citiprogram.org/
2. Log in with your user name and password, which will take you to the main menu.
3. CITI will automatically add the “Refresher” course to your list of courses 90 days before your CITI Training expires. The refresher course should list a status of “Not started” or “Incomplete”. Click on the course name.
4. Begin your course by clicking on the red link “Incomplete Re-Enter”.

Affiliate your certification with UTHSC by completing the following:

1. Go to https://www.citiprogram.org/
2. Log in with your user name and password, which will take you to the main menu.
3. In the blue banner, click “Add Institutional Affiliation”
4. Select “University of Tennessee Health Science Center - Memphis” from the list of institutions.
5. Follow the online instructions

If you are new to UTHSC or collaborating at another institution and have taken Human Subjects Protections and Good Clinical Practice training at another institution, your completion certificate and course modules will be reviewed for reciprocity.  If the coursework is comparable, UTHSC will accept your training. If the coursework in not comparable, additional modules may be assigned as needed, or you must complete one of the two course options noted on this page.

Retain your CITI username and password for all future access. DO NOT create duplicate accounts. Forgotten login information can be retrieved via the "Forgot?" hyperlinks provided on the CITI login page.

It's best to use the email address associated with your NetID. This will facilitate identification of your learning records and will allow tracking within the institution.

The minimum passing score is >85% for initial and recertification training.

Course material may be re-examined and quizzes repeated, as necessary.

You are responsible for maintaining a record of completion. Access and print  your completion report and or/ certificate from the CITI website (from your main menu/view courses page within CITI).

When you complete the initial or refresher course for the CITI UT Health Science Center – Memphis online training, or affiliate your CITI training with the UT Health Science Center - Memphis, your certification will sync with iMedRIS (the IRB’s electronic system).  

If you completed CITI training at another institution and have not affiliated your training via CITI, include a copy of the completion report or CITI certificate with your IRB submission.

The UTHSC IRB does not issue certificates of CITI training completion.

The CITI program is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACGME) to sponsor continuing medical education (CME) activities. There is a handling fee for a CME credit letter. Please see details on the CITI website.
