Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship Training Program
The Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship was established at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in 2005 and is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Education (ACGME), most recently in March 2009.
We offer a three-year Pediatric Cardiology Fellowship program that meets the eligibility requirements for the Pediatric Cardiology certifying examination of the American Board of Pediatrics which includes rotations at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital.
Our Clinical Facility
Le Bonheur Children's Hospital is a 255-bed tertiary care, multi-specialty childrens hospital located within the UTHSC complex and affiliated with the Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare System. Le Bonheur Children's Hospital was established in 1952 as the first childrens hospital in the mid-south region and is the pediatric arm of Methodist Le Bonheur Health Care. Each year, the 45 medical/surgical subspecialties at Le Bonheur treat nearly 130,000 children the majority of them coming from 95 counties in a six-state referral area, although children come to Le Bonheur from all 50 states and many countries.
Within the hospital, there is a 20 bed PICU, 10 bed CVICU, and a 21 bed Intermediate Care Unit.
The Heart Institute at Le Bonheur Children's Hospital uses the combined expertise of an advanced pediatric cardiac team to provide specialized care for children with congenital heart disease. The Heart Institute includes evaluation and treatment of all forms of congenital and acquired heart disease, hypertension, cardiac rhythm disorders and other related pediatric cardiology diagnoses. Our fellows are exposed to the full spectrum of pediatric congenital heart disease, including more than 400 perioperative patients per year.
When children come to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, they are in the hands of a team of experts in pediatric heart care. A specialized group of pediatric cardiologists, pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiac intensivists, pediatric intensivists and anesthesiologists make up the Heart Institute. In addition to the physician staff, advanced practice nurses, perfusionists, cardiac nurses, respiratory therapists, cath lab techs, echocardiographers and eletrocardiogram techs support the care of patients and are each specially trained in pediatric care. Through weekly conferences, children with complicated heart conditions are discussed and a course of treatment is planned.
