SIGIO President's Page

As the SIGIO presidents for 2019-2020, it is our honor to welcome all UTHSC medical students and introduce you to the incredible field of ophthalmology.

Here’s a few reasons why we love it:

  1.  A great mix of surgery and medicine—you don’t have to give either of them up.

  2.  You have so many opportunities in the field, from comprehensive ophthalmology to sub-specializing in cornea and anterior segment, plastic and reconstructive surgery of the orbit and surrounding tissues, glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology, pediatric ophthalmology, and vitreoretinal surgery. Each path has its own complexities and rewards.

  3. The opportunities for local and global mission work—the ophthalmologists at HEI regularly perform pro-bono local surgeries through the Lion’s Club and go on international mission trips to Guatemala and Haiti. Check out the awesome event, Cataract-A-Thon, at this link.

  4. Treating someone’s vision is an honor and privilege—sight really is one of our most precious senses.

  5. Ophthalmologists are some of the best people you’ll meet!

We and the entire executive committee of SIGIO are excited about the upcoming year and are looking forward to serving the student body, as well as the SIGIO members. Please feel free to contact any of us with questions regarding SIGIO or the wonderful field of ophthalmology!
