Biomedical Sciences Program

The PhD program in Biomedical Sciences (IBSP) is an integrated, interdisciplinary, research-oriented graduate program in which students train in faculty laboratories at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, LeBonheur Children's Hospital, and the Veteran Affairs Medical Center, among others.

Interested students apply to one of seven research tracks that best fit their interest; yet they have the option of choosing a mentor from any track and switching tracks based on their specific research needs.

Over 150 participating faculty members from UTHSC, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Research Areas - Cancer, Genetics, Genomics, Microbiology, Immunology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Physiology, Neurosciences and Rehabilitation Science.
Flexibility - students may select a research advisor from any of the tracks and are not limited by departmental barriers found in traditional programs.
Exceptional, yet affordable, living in a metropolitan setting.

Message from the Program Director

The Integrated Biomedical Sciences Program at UTHSC allows students tremendous freedom in shaping their doctoral education to their interests and goals. We have a diverse range of faculty across scientific disciplines at both UTHSC and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Our core and elective curricula provide education in virtually all areas of biomedical science. Students in our program enjoy the flexibility to choose among many mentors and to shape their courses in a way that students in traditional, department-based graduate programs do not.

Students apply for admission directly to one of six research tracks and immediately become immersed in the classroom and research experiences specific to their chosen discipline. Many students opt for a more general curriculum before choosing a specific research area. The track directors and I will work closely with you to tailor the options provided by the IBS Program to best suit your graduate training needs.

Consider the IBSP for your graduate education. You will receive state-of-the-art training from world-renowned faculty at UTHSC, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and the Memphis Veteran's Affairs Medical Center. Upon completing your degree, you will be prepared for a career in academia, government, or industry, where multifaceted researchers are prized for their insight into the complicated problems that emerge from constantly-evolving science and technology.
