Department of Family Medicine

The vision of the UTHSC Department of Family Medicine is to improve the health of the people of Tennessee through leadership in family medicine education, patient care, scholarly activities, collaboration and community service.

Our department consists of two residency training programs located in Memphis and Jackson. Our residency programs have a long tradition of training compassionate, full service family physicians. Our graduates serve in all types of practice settings to include academic medical centers. We are very proud that over 65% of our graduates are in active practice throughout the great State of Tennessee.

Medical Students

We provide a comprehensive training program for medical students from all year groups. Our third year clerkship program offers the student a challenging curriculum with a broad spectrum of patients to learn the basics of family medicine. The student will gain an appreciation of the breadth of family medicine and the many career opportunities available to them. Clerkship placement requests can be made by contacting the clerkship coordinator.

Our three-year residency program provides residents an excellent experience and prepares them to practice in any of the settings available to family physicians.

Our Advanced Women’s Health Care Fellowship is recognized as one of the best in the country.

Family Medicine Center

We provide patient and family-centered care for children and adults of all ages, to include pregnant patients. Our focus is on the prevention of disease, and when that fails, we treat patients with all types of medical conditions. In addition, we have ob/gyn doctors at our Memphis and Jackson programs that provide full service obstetrical and gynecological care for women of all ages. All of our Family Medicine Centers are educational facilities committed to training the next generation of Family Physicians under the supervision of teaching physicians from the University of Tennessee.

Emergency Medicine Fellowship

We also have an Emergency Medicine Fellowship in Jackson.

The primary mission of the UTHSC Department of Family Medicine is to produce high quality Family Medicine physicians to support the primary care needs of the state of Tennessee. To fulfill this vision and mission, we will:

  • Provide a warm, nurturing educational and work environment for health care professionals at all levels to grow and learn
