Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff,

Safety is always our top concern, no matter which of the UT Health Science Center campuses you are a part of. As you are aware, this has been a particularly heartbreaking week for our Memphis community. We recognize that our students, faculty, and staff may be working through the stresses of recent tragedies and there are likely concerns about campus safety. To that end, we want to add substantive detail, as provided below, to our expression that your safety is always our top priority and will remain so going forward.

UTHSC Continues to Place Campus Safety as a Top Priority

  • Alarms.org ranks UTHSC as the 9th safest college in America, out of 490 institutions. This ranking was determined by compiling crime data from the FBI, as well as from the community surrounding campus. No submission or data provided by the institutions was used.
  • UTHSC Campus Police presently employs:
    • 33 police officers (certified through the State of Tennessee's Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission)
    • 23 security officers
    • 6 dispatchers
  • UTHSC Campus Police is accessible 24 hours/day, 7 days/week, year-round. UTHSC Campus Police can be reached via phone at 901.448.4444, RAVE Guardian App, or from multiple emergency phone boxes/towers located throughout campus.
  • UTHSC has invested over $26 million for security enhancements over the past several years, which includes:
    • Installation of 3,636 cameras
    • 470 access-controlled doors
    • 150 panic alarms strategically located throughout campus
  • Safety Escorts are available from dusk until dawn for faculty, staff, and students requesting assistance to and from your vehicle or work location in the Medical District. Please call UTHSC Campus Police Dispatch at 901.448.4444 to request a safety escort. Safety escorts are also provided for anyone in their last trimester of pregnancy or anyone with a temporary injury. Learn more about safety escorts on the UTHSC Campus Police website.
  • Faculty, staff, and students may readily access the Daily Crime Log and Annual Security Report at uthsc.edu/campus-police/clery-act/crime-statistics.php.

If you are struggling to cope with thoughts and feelings associated with these recent events in the Memphis community, please know that we have resources available to you.

We will continue to prioritize our security efforts on campus. Integral to that has – and will continue to be – your vigilance and support. Accordingly, we ask that you stay vigilant always and when you see something that seems odd or suspicious, please do say something. Do not hesitate to call UTHSC Campus Police at 901.448.4444 with anything that seems like it might be concerning.

Our thoughts are with the relatives and friends of those who have been affected by the tragic loss of life through violence over the past few days.
