Summer Research in Psychiatry

Medical Student Summer Fellowship Opportunities

Medical Student Summer Research Fellowship in Psychiatry at Columbia University

Deadline:  Friday, December 8, 2017

In 2016 the Psychiatry Department at Columbia University initiated a Summer Fellowship for medical students completing their first year of medical school. The fellowship aims to expose students who belong to historically underrepresented racial or ethnic groups to the breadth of career opportunities in psychiatry. Since 2017, we expanded this effort to include an eight-week research fellowship in psychiatry for underrepresented students. Students will be assigned to work with a research mentor while gaining broad exposure to a wide range of research opportunities in psychiatry. The program provides a stipend of $4,800.

Program dates for summer 2018: Monday, June 11th-Friday, August 3rd

Summer Medical Student Fellowships in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

Supported by AACAP’s Campaign for America’s Kids (CFAK)

The Summer Medical Student Fellowship provides up to $3,500 for 12 weeks of clinical or research training under a child and adolescent psychiatrist mentor. This program also provides additional travel funds for the required attendance of award recipients to the 64th AACAP Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C. in October 2017.

There are over 15 million children in need of mental health treatment, but there is a severe shortage of trained child psychiatrists. Andrés Martin, MD, MPH, Professor of Psychiatry at the Yale Child Study Center, is leading an initiative to promote mental health awareness and generate funding for child psychiatry training by cycling across the country in the summer of 2017. All are invited to participate, donate, and encourage others to join the effort. For information, visit
