Compliance Training

HIPAA Privacy training will be made available to faculty, staff, students, and residents in the 1st quarter of 2017.  If you have questions, please contact the Institutional Compliance Office via email or (901) 448-8469.

If you are required to take this course, you will receive an individual email with the below listed instructions when the training is released to the campus.  Until that time, you cannot access this training.

Attention:  Faculty, Staff, Students, and Residents

The University employs certain physicians and other health care providers, and with respect thereto, transmits health information in connection with transactions for which the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has adopted standards.  In accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996, the University must comply with Privacy policies and procedures. The University's workforce must undergo periodic HIPAA Privacy training.  The workforce is defined as employees, volunteers, trainees, and other persons who conduct, in the performance of work for a covered entity, is under the direct control of such entity, whether or not they are paid by the covered entity.

The University's workforce is required to complete this web based HIPAA Privacy training course, which is designed to increase your awareness and knowledge of applicable laws and how they may impact your current job responsibilities.  If you have previously taken HIPAA Privacy training at the University or another employer, you are still required to take this on-line training.  This training will become the official University-sanctioned training for HIPAA Privacy compliance purposes.

Below are step-by-step instructions on how to access the course. 

You can choose to take the course in Video, Audio or Silent mode. If you experience difficulties loading the video content or have a slow connection, we suggest that you choose the Audio or Silent version. 

There is a bookmark capability which allows you the flexibility to complete the training in more than one session.


  1. Go to the login page for HIPAA Privacy training
  2. Enter your NetID and password and click the "Login" button.
    NetID:  All faculty, staff, students, and residents at the University are provided with a NetID and password when they join the University.  
    Your NetID:  If you do not know your NetID, you can find it by searching for yourself using UTHSC's online directory
    Your password:  For detailed information about your password, please visit the Password Management website or call the UTHSC HelpDesk at (901) 448-2222 or (800) 413-7830.
  3. Select the title of the course assigned to you under your Current Activities and click on Launch to start the training.
  4. If your course does not open, please turn off your pop-up blockers to view the course.

For those employees needing access to a computer, we will provide access to a computer lab.  Please contact the Institutional Compliance Office if assistance is necessary.
