Department of Medical Education

The Department of Medical Education unites core teaching faculty from across the College of Medicine, via joint appointments, into a single academic department with a sole focus on the College’s educational mission.

Faculty members include both basic scientists and clinician educators who collaborate across the four year medical curriculum to provide the best possible learning experiences and environment in which to prepare future physicians. As campus leaders in medical education, department faculty provide peer training in educational methods; promote innovation in learning and teaching; contribute to scholarship in medical education; and lead improvement in education within the College through ongoing assessment. The Department also works closely with the Office of Medical Education to assure optimal delivery of a comprehensive, integrated curriculum.

In summary, the Department’s driving goal is to support and develop our students into physicians who are optimally prepared for their future roles as leaders in medical practice, research, and education. Goals & Objectives

The Department of Medical Education (DOME) was created in November of 2013 to unite core teaching faculty from across the college, via joint appointments, into a single department with a focus on the College’s educational mission. The department’s goals are to:

  • Assure optimal delivery of a comprehensive, integrated curriculum. The department will support collaboration among teaching faculty, leading to improved integration, consistency, and continuity both within and across courses and modules;
  • Accelerate adoption of active and engaged learning across the curriculum. Department faculty will be expected to further refine, expand and disseminate use of these methods;
  • Support faculty development. In addition to other ongoing faculty development activities, the Department will foster concentrated faculty development for our core educators with the expectation that they will then share their expertise across the college through modeling and peer mentoring;
  • Improve and develop tools for assessment of teaching and learning effectiveness at the faculty (particularly peer evaluation), course, and curricular levels;
  • Support research in medical education.
