G. Nicholas Verne, MD Appointed Interim Executive Dean of the College of Medicine

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

The College of Medicine has new leadership.

Effective today, Dr. Scott Strome has stepped down from his administrative position as Vice Chancellor for Clinical Affairs and the Robert Kaplan Executive Dean of the UTHSC College of Medicine. We thank Dr. Strome for his accomplishments and his leadership.

Dr. G. Nicholas Verne has been appointed as Interim Vice Chancellor for Clinical Affairs and Executive Dean of the College of Medicine. Dr. Verne is a highly regarded leader within our UTHSC community and with our partners across Tennessee as he previously served as Senior Associate Dean for Statewide Operations and Strategy, Chair of the Department of Medicine in the College of Medicine, and Chief of Medicine at Regional One Health.

G. Nicholas Verne, MD

G. Nicholas Verne, MD

Dr. Verne is a remarkably accomplished academic leader. In addition to his administrative acumen, he is a practicing gastroenterologist and a physician-scientist whose research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Veterans Affairs for more than 20 years.

Prior to coming to UTHSC, Dr. Verne served as chair of the Department of Medicine at the Tulane University School of Medicine, where he held the Harry B. Greenberg, MD, Chair in Internal Medicine and served as the Chief Medical Officer for the Tulane University Health System. He is a master of the American College of Physicians, a fellow of the American Gastroenterology Association and a member of the Association of Professors in Medicine.  Dr. Verne also currently serves as President of the American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society. Earlier this year, he completed the 2023 cohort of the UT System’s Executive Leadership Institute.

Dr. Verne’s past experiences and accomplishments in education, research, and clinical care have prepared him to seamlessly step into this important interim position. Also, he has played a major role in the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accreditation process at two other institutions, has served on College of Medicine admissions committees for over a decade, and is a dedicated mentor to medical students. His experience and passion for medical student teaching will be tremendously beneficial as he now champions the very important upcoming accreditation process for the College of Medicine and as he supports all our medical students.

Details on a national search for the next Vice Chancellor and Executive Dean will be forthcoming.

I am appreciative and grateful to Dr. Verne for his service in stepping into this interim leadership position. Please join me in congratulating – and supporting – Dr. Verne in this important role.

Sincerely,

Chancellor Buckley signature
