American Heart Association

Dr. Lisa K. Jennings is Principal Investigator on the UTHSC’s American Heart Association Health Sciences Fellowship Grant. This is an institutional award for two years designed to provide a meaningful research experience to health sciences students. The grant provides $1,200 per month for three students per year. Fellowships are three consecutive months in duration. To qualify students must be currently enrolled in a predoctoral MD, DO, DDS, PharmD or equivalent health science program. Past students have generally been post first year of their respective program but this is not a requirement.

Fellows are paired with Vascular Biology Participating Faculty Members for the duration of the project. Research conducted must be in the area of heart disease or stroke. An example of a past projects is entitled: A Comparison of Polyurethane and Silicone in Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters.

American Society of Hematology

Provides $4,500 in salary support for one medical student to work on a clinical or laboratory project involving the study of blood or blood diseases as well as a $500 travel award for the student to attend the ASH Annual Meeting and Scientific Exposition.

Research must be related to hematology. Past projects have included: Hemorrhagic Shock and Cannabinoids and Methacyrlate Derived Adhesive Coating of ePTTFE Graft as Preparation for Rapamycin Coating-Approaches to Reduce Restenosis and Thrombogenicity.
