As a participant in the UTHSC Medical Student Research Fellowship I chose to do public health research. The study sought to assess the characteristics of text messages and primary-care based text messaging programs most likely to be effective in supporting improved self-care decisions in medically underserved African-Americans with uncontrolled diabetes and multiple chronic conditions. The cross-sectional mixed methods approach employed a concurrent self-administered survey and focus group. The study is ongoing with goals of characterizing best text messaging practices from the patient's perspective.
