Dr. Brewer is a Tennessee native and received a BA from UTK and a MT from St. Jude Children's Research hospital in clinical microbiology. She received her medical degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine and completed her residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Infectious Disease at UT.

She has served as director of educational programs for third and fourth year medical students in the Department of Medicine for 9 years and as a faculty member in that discipline for 14 years.
