What is Preventive Medicine?

Preventive Medicine is a medical discipline which focuses on preventing diseases and promoting a general state of health and well being. It is a medical specialty recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) that encompasses multiple ‘population-based’ and clinical approaches to health care. According to the American College of Preventive Medicine Website:

While Preventive Medicine physicians work in a variety of settings, they share the common goal of looking at systemic and population-based interventions to improve the health of individuals. For example, ACPM members assess the health status of various populations, including underserved/vulnerable populations, design systematic approaches to strengthen the delivery of preventive services, lead terrorism/disaster preparedness and response efforts for local communities and worksites, and identify and abate workplace hazards, to name just a few.
