What is Informatics?

Informatics is the scientific study of information. In our department, informatics is a discipline that lies at the intersection of information science, computer science and health care. Also called clinical and community research informatics, health care informatics, medical informatics, clinical informatics, or biomedical informatics, this incredibly broad field seeks to efficiently and effectively organize, display, and transmit data in ways that are meaningful to users in health and medicine.

The role and importance of informatics is growing exponentially. Not only does a well managed data collection effort facilitate a strong clinical study, but, researchers also look to secondary databases for gathering patient information. For example, health care claims databases and electronic health records (EHRs) are important sources of information that many of our studies seek to take advantage of.
