In the spring of 2006, students at the UT Health Science Center College of Pharmacy established a scholarship in the name of Melinda Rhea Garrett. The endowment is now funded and the first scholarship will be presented this year.
Melinda was a first-year pharmacy student at the UTHSC College of Pharmacy, when she died suddenly on March 28, 2006 following a brief illness. She was a member of Kappa Psi and the Academy of Student Pharmacists Executive Committee. Born December 1, 1982, to Dale and Fay Garrett of McKenzie, Tenn., Melinda was a 2001 graduate of McKenzie High School, where she was an honor student and a member of the cheerleading squad. She graduated from the University of Tennessee at Martin (UTM), where she was a member of Alpha Delta Pi sorority. While an undergraduate student, she was a University Scholar and president of the Panhellenic Council, as well as a member of both the homecoming court and the Miss UTM royalty. Those who knew Melinda will always remember her beautiful smile, genuine laugh, and sense of humor. Melinda's doctor of pharmacy degree was posthumously awarded to her family in 2009.
