Critical Care Team

Training with us means you'll be a valued member of our close-knit group of pediatric critical attendings and fellows. It also means being a part of a multi-disciplinary group of pediatric healthcare providers consisting of a full spectrum of subspecialists, general pediatric residents, and acute care nurse practitioners. Our team is rounded out by excellent partnerships with our bedside critical care nurses, respiratory therapists, pediatric pharmacists, pediatric nutritionists, and medical social workers. This team provides care to approximately 1,700 admissions annually, and every single patient that is admitted to one of our units is followed and treated by this critical care team.

Pharmacy and Nutrition

Our units benefit from an on-site, dedicated critical care satellite pharmacy staffed 24/7 by a pediatric pharmacist. This helps to ensure the timely and appropriate administration of medications to our patients. In addition, a pharmacist is present on rounds seven days per week. The pharmacy department also provides a dedicated TPN team, (Total Parental Nutrition), to help formulate parental nutrition for those patients unable to tolerate enteral feedings. A dedicated critical care nutritionist always participates on daily rounds, and makes certain the enteral nutrition is optimally delivered to meet nutritional needs. Both services are invaluable resources for fellowship training.

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)

Le Bonheur has been designated by the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) as an ECMO "Center of Excellence" for the fourth consecutive year. Averaging 18 cases annually, your ECMO training will be nothing short of robust. Uniquely, both neonatal and pediatric ECMO patients are managed in the PICU, or in the CVICU when related to congenital heart disease.

Transport

Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital sponsors Pedi-Flite, our specialized transport team that provides ground, rotary wing, and fixed-wing transport for patients referred to the hospital. Pedi-Flite is staffed 24/7/365 by a dedicated team of critical care nurses, respiratory therapists and emergency medical technicians. Our team provides expert pediatric care to an area which covers a 150-mile radius by ground and rotary wing, and further afield by fixed wing. Our trainees have the opportunity to provide medical control for transported patients being directly admitted to the PICU.

The Division of Critical Care Medicine at UTHSC and Le Bonheur Children's Hospital is dedicated to providing caring, high-quality, evidence-based care to the critically ill children of the Mid-South and from around the world.
