Residency Training Information


The UTHSC Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine offers a combined ACGME-accredited training program in Anatomic Pathology (AP) and Clinical Pathology (CP).

Mission Statement

Our mission is to prepare our residents and  fellows for a successful career in a wide variety of areas in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology. In addition to developing an extensive knowledge database, our program fosters and emphasizes the development of continuous learning as a life-long habit, and service to patients as a first priority. When training is complete, the individual should be exceedingly competent in Pathology and Laboratory Medicine , an excellent manager, an effective communicator,  a strong patient advocate, and a dedicated professional. The resident or fellow should be able to practice their specialty with distinction within a variety of health care environments and maintain this excellence for the length of his/her career.

We are one of the largest training programs in the region with more than 100 pathologists and laboratory scientists in more than 10 affiliated practices and institutions involved in our residency program who provide great breadth and depth to the training experience. The institutions process a combined >200,000 surgical pathology cases and >10,000,000 clinical laboratory tests. Residents interact with experienced and often boarded specialists in many AP and CP areas. In addition, residents have many opportunities to develop teaching skills, and to participate in clinical, translational, and basic research under the direction of our Experimental Pathology faculty. Residents are also strongly encouraged to participate in public service and professional organization activities
