The orthopaedic residency program provides an opportunity to gain a well-rounded education and surgical training in the fundamentals of the science and the art of orthopaedic surgery.
The program is designed to provide education and experience in all aspects of orthopaedic surgery and is carefully balanced between academic theoretical learning and practical experience. Clinical experience and graduated exposure to surgical techniques are enhanced by a system of categorical orthopaedic services. Research opportunity is available and encouraged. All residents participate in clinical research, and those so inclined are involved in laboratory research projects.
Because we believe that the residency years are an extension of the educational process, rather than an "apprenticeship" we try to emphasize educational balance, a strong basic science foundation, continuity of patient care, close faculty participation in all phases of the learning process, and emphasis on the "why" as well as the "how" of orthopaedic surgery. An understanding of anatomy, biology, and pathology of the musculoskeletal system is essential for the continued development of surgical skills after completion of the residency years: if the "why" is understood, the "how" can be found. Therefore, clinical problems are related to basic science precepts whenever possible.
Residents are involved in the teaching process at various times during the entire orthopaedic program (lectures, lab demonstrations, etc.). This provides an opportunity to develop and test teaching skills. Since teaching compels learning, this opportunity provides an important adjunct to the resident's educational experience.
Because therapeutic effectiveness often can be evaluated only in the light of long-term results, patients are followed for long periods of time, even after treatment is completed, to provide the opportunity for long-term evaluation of different forms of therapy. The prime goal of this program is the teaching of exemplary patient care.
