Dr. Lanny Coker's educational track began with his obtaining an associate degree in nursing from the Northeast Mississippi Community College. Later he received his BSN from the University of North Alabama. After working for several years as a critical care nurse and nurse manager, he attended Washington University in St. Louis, where he received his certification as a registered nurse anesthetist.

Eventually, Dr. Coker received both his MSN and DNSc degrees from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Since the inception of the nurse anesthesia option at UTHSC, Dr. Coker has actively been involved with the education of its students. He has served as clinical faculty, and as a clinical liaison, for the nurse anesthesia students who are doing their obstetric anesthesia rotations at Regional One Health.

In January 2015, he joined UTHSC as an assistant professor. His academic efforts are centered within the nurse anesthesia concentration where he also serves as an assistant program director for clinical education. His professional memberships include the American Nurses Association, American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, Tennessee Association of Nurse Anesthetists, Sigma Theta Tau, and Society of Non OR Interventionalists and Anesthesiologists.
