Dr. Carol Thompson received her BSN from Florida State University, MS from the University of Maryland, PhD from Case Western Reserve University, and DNP from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC). She has been a nursing faculty member at UTHSC since 1988, and presently is a tenured Professor of Critical and Acute Care Nursing. Her clinical practice is as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner at Methodist University. Her research focus has been dyspnea in mechanically ventilated adults, procedural pain, and simulation. She is an NIH Fellow in Genetics. She has been certified as a critical care registered nurse (CCRN) for 31 years. She is also certified as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) and Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). She is a Fellow of Critical Care Medicine, Academy of Nurse Practitioners, and American Academy of Nursing.
She is the Concentration Coordinator for Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nursing and teaches DNP students. She has received excellence in teaching awards. She has served on the Tennessee Board of Nursing and the Board of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. She presently is the President of the Society of Critical Care Medicine.
