2013 Administrative Professionals Day Speaker Bio
Deborah (Debbie) L. Smith, Ed.D.
Deborah (Debbie) L. Smith, Ed.D., is Associate Vice Chancellor for Research at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, where she has completed more than 30 years of service. She began her career at UTHSC in Academic Affairs, has been a research administrator since 1985, and is a co-founder of the Mid-South Area Research Administrators. Debbie is co-editor of the NCURA (National Council of Research Administrators) Magazine and a graduate of the NCURA Leadership Development Institute and The University of Tennessee Leadership Institute. She holds a B.S.E. from Arkansas State University, and M.S. and Ed.D. degrees from Memphis State University (now University of Memphis); her background includes teaching at the community college and graduate levels. She earned both her master’s and doctoral degrees while working full time.
Debbie has presented at regional professional meetings and has published in the NCURA Magazine, Research Management Review, and the SRA Journal.
Debbie’s community activities include serving as a volunteer for FM 89.3 WYPL, the public library's radio station, and the Memphis Area Master Gardeners. She loves to read and is an avid proponent of life-long learning. You may find her in everything from Greek class to quilting, weaving, knitting, and gardening seminars.
