Course Description

Varying pathologic conditions of different nature can affect the tongue that may be encountered in general and specialty dental practices. This course is designed based on the presentation of some selected cases and provides a brief review on some more common entities which may affect the tongue. For each case, a short case history/description, clear image(s), and four possible diagnoses (in the form of a multiple-choice question) will be presented first, then with emphasize on the distinguishing features of the mimics, the final diagnosis and treatment/management will be discussed. 

Course Objectives

At the end of this course, the attendees should be able to:

  • Classify/categorize the different lesions of the tongue based on their nature and etiology
  • Describe the clinical features of the tongue lesions of different etiologies.
  • Improve diagnostic knowledge of the clinical description of the tongue lesions.
  • Distinguish those normal variants of the tongue which may resemble a pathologic condition.
  • Differentiate the premalignant/malignant processes form inflammatory/reactive conditions affecting the tongue.
  • Accurately select the most likely or least likely diagnosis of a projected clinical case based on a provided history and clinical features.
  • Select the proper management and treatment of a case based on its diagnosis.

 

About Dr. Shokoufeh Shahrabi Farahani, DDS, MS, DMSc

Dr. Shokoufeh Shahrabi Farahani, DDS, MS, DMSc

Dr. Farahani graduated from the Dental School of Tehran University of Medical Sciences and Health Services in 1996 with her DDS degree. After graduation, she entered a three-year residency program in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. She served as an Assistant professor and Director in the Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Department of Dental School of Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences, Yazd, Iran in 1999-2008. She continued her education in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and Oral Biology at Harvard School of Dental Medicine, Boston, Massachusetts in 2009.

Dr. Farahani became Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology in 2012 and received her Doctor of Medical Sciences (DMSc) degree in Oral Biology in 2013 and immediately joined the faculty at the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry in the Department of Diagnostic Sciences. Currently, she serve as an Associate Professor and Director at UTHSC, College of Dentistry and an editorial board member/reviewer in several pathology and dermatology journals. She has published some papers and her research interest focuses on vascular biology, oral cancer and angiogenesis, histopathologic aspects of cosmetic dermal fillers, salivary gland, and soft tissue/bone pathology.
