Information for Students, Faculty and Staff regarding International Travel - COVID-19

February 26, 2020

We want to provide important guidance regarding international travel as the situation for COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) continues to evolve with new outbreaks occurring in Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. As the situation develops, we are closely evaluating university associated international travel to ensure the best support for students, staff, and faculty. At this time, there have been no cases at UTHSC.

In order to ensure the continued safety and communication with all members of our community who are traveling abroad, please see the additional guidance below:

  • In order to ensure the continued safety and communication with all members of our community who are traveling abroad, please see the additional guidance below:
  • If you are an employee currently abroad in an affected area and wish to voluntarily return home, please contact the Office of International Affairs at 901-448-8484 or connie.childs@uthsc.edu. We can connect you with resources to help coordinate your travel needs.
  • If the area you are in reaches CDC Level 2, you may choose to return home or complete your travel plans.
  • Should the travel conditions in the area where you are reach the CDC Level 3 or U.S. State Department Level 4 travel advisory, which is currently the case in China and South Korea only, we will require that you leave the area.
  • Employees who have traveled within or through a country at CDC Warning Level 3 will not be allowed to return to campus or engage in any UTHSC activities until a 14-day quarantine has been completed.
  • If you have not departed for travel at this time, UTHSC employees are not authorized to travel to areas at CDC Alert Level 2, unless that alert is related to a vaccine-preventable illness and the traveler has been fully vaccinated.
  • Employees should be aware that conditions may change rapidly in areas where there is an outbreak that may restrict return travel to the United States or make return impossible. Involuntary quarantines may be imposed away from home.

Employees are encouraged to monitor CDC and US State Department travel advisories for up to date information related to travel safety.

As a reminder, the risk of contracting this illness remains low in the United States. To prevent the spread of many infections please practice good respiratory hygiene including frequent hand washing, covering coughs and sneezes, and staying home while you are sick.

Your safety, well-being and ability to continue your regular university activities remain the highest priorities for the entire leadership of UTHSC.
