Vascular
biology plays a vital role in the progression of many debilitating diseases
including: cancer, diabetes, heart disease and stroke. Vascular disease
is the most common cause of death and disablility in Western societies.
Understanding
the vascular system is critical in the war against vascular disease.
As a result, the integrated study of disease related to the vascular
system is developing as an essential area of focus on the top medical
school campuses around the country.
The Vascular
Biology Program at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center
(UTHSC) was established in 1999 to facilitate collaborations in the
Mid-South to accelerate knowledge in the area of vascular biology. In
January of 2000 the Vascular Biology Program received a 5 million dollar
investment from the State of Tennessee to further the accomplishments
of the program and create a Vascular Biology Center of Excellence (VBCE).
To date,
the VBCE has organized approximately 100 investigators from more than
30 departments across the UTHSC campus and five additional institutions
(including St. Jude Children's Research Center, Methodist Hospital,
The University of Memphis, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Le Bonheur
Children's Hospital) to facilitate bench to bedside vascular biology
research.
