Complex General Surgical Oncology Fellowship

The UTHSC Department of Surgery endeavors to train surgical oncologists with high-level technical skills and a commitment to pursuing new knowledge in the care of cancer patients.

The Department of Surgery's goal in pursuing a fellowship in Complex General Surgical Oncology is to develop both skilled independent cancer practitioners as well as trained physician scientists.

Message from the Program Director

Dr. Martin Fleming
Martin Fleming, MD

The Division of Surgical Oncology at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center has grown significantly in the last few years. By expanding the faculty, we have been able to provide increasingly specialized care for our cancer patients.

While we are all capable of caring for the broad scope of surgical problems that are involved in cancer, we now have faculty primarily dedicated to specific areas in surgical oncology. A fellow will experience focused surgical patient care in breast, melanoma, sarcoma, colorectal, gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary and endocrine oncology by working with the faculty in our Division. On the planned rotations outside of the general Division of Surgical Oncology, the fellow will experience thoracic oncology, gynecologic oncology and radiation oncology. There are also opportunities for learning in interventional radiation oncology and pathology during the clinical rotations. Research will be occurring throughout the fellowship with clinical, translational and basic science options and a dedicated half-year research block in the beginning of the second year.

Memphis is geographically positioned such that the closest major medical center is almost 200 miles away.  This makes our center a regional provider of cancer care for Tennessee, Mississippi, Arkansas, Missouri and Kentucky. Fellows will experience a large volume of clinical activity and see a wide variety of oncology patients. Our collaboration between the University of Tennessee Health Science Center and Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare allows for an outstanding opportunity to train in surgical oncology for any surgeon pursuing board certification in Complex General Surgical Oncology.
