Pediatric Surgery

Dr. Blakely was born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. He attended college at Rhodes College in Memphis and medical school at The University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Memphis. Following medical school, he chose to stay at The University of Tennessee to complete both his general surgery residency and his pediatric surgery fellowship. He also completed 3 years of basic science research in immunology during his surgery residency at the Harvard Medical School in Boston. He served as Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Surgery at the University of Texas-Houston Health Science Center and while there, received his Masters of Science in Clinical Research. In 2004 he accepted the position of Associate Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center. Dr. Blakely received a K23 Career Development Award from the NIH and continues to have a strong interest in conducting clinical trials in pediatric surgery. He currently is the PI of a 16-center, NIH funded randomized trial evaluating surgical therapies for premature neonates with necrotizing enterocolitis.

He is married to Johnetta Blakely who is a medical oncologist and they have two children- Lilly Grace and Elizabeth. He is an active member of Second Presbyterian Church and other charitable Memphis organizations.
