LACU Fee Based Services
The University of Tennessee Health Science Center?s Laboratory Animal Care Unit (LACU) is the University?s primary support to staff who use animals for their research. Accredited by the Association for the Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC), our facilities provide an environment in which our investigators can develop, maintain, and enhance their respective research programs. The LACU veterinary and husbandry staff are committed to providing quality care and ensuring the humane usage of animals on the UTHSC campus. To support our research staff, the LACU provides, for a fee, technical assistance to investigators and their research staff upon request. These animal-related services include:
- Tissue collection for DNA analysis
- Ear tagging and notching
- Animal tattooing
- Blood collection
- Study related treatments
- Breeding colony management
- Anesthesia monitoring
- Radiography
- Micro computed tomography (micro CT)
- Rodent micro-ultrasonography

- Animal biomethodology training
- Animal import and export
- Ethylene oxide sterilization
