Ear Tagging and Notching
Mice can be ear tagged or notched as a permanent means of identification. Serially numbered stainless steel tags are available that can be applied to one ear of the
mouse using a specialized applicator. Alternatively ears can also be notched according to a standard numbering scheme (see image) using an ear punch. Both of these procedures can be performed without anesthesia and cause only momentary pain to the animal.
Our veterinary technicians are training in performing both of these procedures and can provide a list of animal numbers following identification.
Fees:
Ear notching: technician time of $37.50/hour
Ear tagging: technician time of $37.50/hour + $0.18/ear tag
**Ear tagging/notching procedures must be listed and described in an approved IACUC protocol**
