The IRB in Memphis has responsibility for the review of research involving human subjects for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, Methodist Healthcare-Memphis Hospitals, Regional Medical Center (The MED), and UT Medical Group, Inc.
The IRB in Knoxville has the responsibility for the review of human subjects research at the Graduate School of Medicine in Knoxville and the UT Medical Center in Knoxville, an independent not-for-profit organization operated by University Health System, Inc.
The IRB in Chattanooga has the responsibility for the review of human subjects research at the College of Medicine in Chattanooga and Erlanger Health Systems.
The primary function of the IRB is to assist the investigator in the protection of the rights and welfare of human subjects. It is necessary for others who are independent of the research to share the responsibility for determining the standards for ethical conduct of research involving human subjects.
