The IRBs

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center Institutional Review Board (UTHSC IRB) is comprised of 6 IRBs, located in Memphis, Knoxville, and Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Sections 1-4 of the IRB meet monthly in 910 Madison, Suite 502, Memphis, TN on the first, second, third, and fourth Wednesdays of the month, respectively. Click "Meeting Schedules" on the left side of your screen for details.

Section 5 of the IRB meets the 3rd Tuesday of the month at the University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine in Knoxville's The Institutional Review Board external link icon page.

Section 6 of the IRB meets the 4th Wednesday of every month at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in Chattanooga's Institutional Review Board Overview external link icon page.

Scope

The IRB in Memphis has responsibility for the review of research involving human subjects for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center, Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, Methodist Healthcare-Memphis Hospitals, Regional Medical Center (The MED), and UT Medical Group, Inc.

The IRB in Knoxville has the responsibility for the review of human subjects research at the Graduate School of Medicine in Knoxville and the UT Medical Center in Knoxville, an independent not-for-profit organization operated by University Health System, Inc.

The IRB in Chattanooga has the responsibility for the review of human subjects research at the College of Medicine in Chattanooga and Erlanger Health Systems.

Function

The primary function of the IRB is to assist the investigator in the protection of the rights and welfare of human subjects. It is necessary for others who are independent of the research to share the responsibility for determining the standards for ethical conduct of research involving human subjects. Investigators, however, carry primary responsibility for assuring that research protocols measure up to standards established by the IRB.
