The Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP)

The UTHSC Quality Enhancement Plan topic is Social Determinants of Health.

What are Social Determinants of Health?
"the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age. These circumstances are shaped by the distribution of money, power and resources at global, national and local levels." - World Health Organization

What is Community Engaged Care?

Our Community Engaged Care QEP initiative is part of UTHSC’s commitment to prepare graduates to understand and address the social determinants of health in the communities we serve.

Through academic programming, experiential opportunities, service learning and a new co-curricular certification program, our goal is to equip students with the tools needed to address the Social Determinants of Health. Our new student programing prepares students through simulations, speakers and workshops.

Social and economic factors play a significant role in health outcomes. As we help our students identify and analyze the drivers of those social and economic factors, our QEP will have a long term effect for how our students demonstrate integrating the determinants with their patient interactions and inter-professional networks.

What is the QEP?

The Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) is a multi-year commitment that focuses on transforming student learning.  A focus on the Social Determinants of Health is “the big idea” for our students and will enhance their disciplinary training.  The QEP topic is tied to our mission and can be measured as part of the strategic plan.

UTHSC is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools – Commission on Colleges or SACS COC. As part of the 2020 reaffirmation process, UTHSC must develop and later implement the QEP.  The QEP is a big idea that creates value added learning experiences for our students and ultimately improves delivery of healthcare by our graduates. The QEP gives us the opportunity to look at what is important to our educational programs and then shape student learning in unique and transformative ways.

Reach out to qep@uthsc.edu and volunteer for one of the many committees who will work to create this transformative initiative.
