First Tennessee Chair of Excellence
Previous Chair: Dr William E. Evans
Dr. William E. Evans was the initial holder of the First Tennessee Chair of Excellence, from 1989 until 2006. He was named Director and CEO of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in 2004. He currently holds the St. Jude Professorship at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center.
A native of Clarksville, Tennessee, he received his B.S. in Pharmacy and Pharm.D. degrees from the UT College of Pharmacy. Dr. Evans joined the faculty of St. Jude in 1976 and for 19 years he served as Chair of the Pharmaceutical Sciences Department at SJCRH, where he developed a laboratory that has been the site of education and training for more than 100 doctoral research fellows, graduate and undergraduate students from around the world. In 1987, he developed the UTHSC Center for Pediatric Pharmacokinetics and Therapeutics, a Tennessee Center of Excellence.
For the past 30 years, Dr. Evans’ research has focused on anticancer agents, with an emphasis on childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). Several ap¬proaches are currently being used to identify genes that are important determinants of the disposition and effects of antileukemic agents, including the interrogation of candidate genes and the application of genome wide approaches such as gene expression profiling of leukemia cells and haplotype mapping of patient cohorts that have been uniformly treated and evaluated on prospective clinical trials.
Dr. Evans has authored over 300 scientific articles and book chapters, has been the editor of several textbooks and scientific journals, and has received many national awards for his research. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine in 2002, and he has received three consecutive NIH MERIT Awards from the National Cancer Institute.
