Maryanne Chumpia, M.D.
University of Tennessee Health Science Center
Dr. Chumpia is a native, nearly lifelong Memphian, graduating from the University of Memphis with a BS in Chemistry and attending medical school at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. During these formative years, she volunteered at a student-run clinic for Latinos and participated in a few research projects, most recently surveying transitions of care for heart failure patients. She is a member of Alpha Omega Alpha. In the future, Maryanne hopes to find a career in which she can combine her interests in academic medicine, critical care, and community health. When not working, she typically acts a minimum of a half-century older than her true age, as she loves any movie starring Cary Grant and spends every Sunday morning with a crossword puzzle, though she also more youthfully boasts a massive shoe collection and enjoys loud music.
Austin Dalgo, M.D.
University of Alabama School of Medicine
Dr. Dalgo was born in Mobile, Alabama and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. He was taught from a very early age to love the University of Alabama Crimson Tide and thus he attended that hallowed school four magnificent years where he earned his BS and majored in Biology and English. After college Austin married his best friend Megan and earned his Master of Arts at Covenant Seminary. For medical school he attended the University of Alabama SOM at Birmingham. In his spare time, Austin loves to read, play with his beautiful daughter, hike, grill with friends, run at Shelby Farms with his dog, and watch Psych. In the future he hopes to spend time working with a medically underserved population.
Nidhi Dole, M.D.
Medical University of South Carolina College of Medicine
Dr. Dole was born in India and grew up in California and South Carolina. While in high school in Greenville, SC, Dole met a sweet guy, Michael, who is now her husband! (He’s also a pediatric resident here!) They attended college at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC where she majored in Biology. They moved to Charleston, SC to attend the Medical University of South Carolina. Nidhi and Michael are really excited to explore a different part of the country and to make Memphis their new home! Their dogs, Monty and Nalah, are especially looking forward to running around in Shelby Farms. In her spare time, Dole enjoys traveling, running, cooking, reading, watching movies, and spending time with family and friends.
Nicholas Jones, M.D.
University of Kentucky College of Medicine
Dr. Jones was born in Lexington, Kentucky, but grew up in the small town of Madisonville in western Kentucky. When Nick was 18 he told everyone who asked that he was 100% sure he never wanted to go to medical school. At the age of 21 he applied to medical school, to absolutely no-one's surprise. After graduating with a BS in Psychobiology at the University of Evansville, he enrolled in the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. In Memphis, Nick will continue to root for the Wildcats no matter how many times he hears Rocky Top. He enjoys spending time with his wife and they look forward to getting to know the city of Memphis and all it offers.
Marc Lee, M.D.
University of Kentucky College of Medicine
Dr. Lee is from the beautiful mountains of Charleston, WV, but was originally born in Cebu, Philippines (a really long plane trip). He attended Wake Forest University with a BS in Biology, a and minor in Spanish, and obtained his MD at WVU School of Medicine. In his free time, Marc loves to try new things, but especially likes to travel, be outside, bike, hang out with friends, and watch movies, Modern Family, or the Office. He loves listening to music, playing music, watching live music. (he was a member of a med student band known as The Arrhythmias that played all the glorious, forgettable hits of the 90's), and eating all sorts of ribs and barbecue. His favorite thing to do, however, is run and train outside with his girlfriend, Jennifer Armbruster, a peds intern. Marc is looking forward to making the most out of his time in Memphis, but hopes the Mississippi River stays put for now.
John Malleis, M.D.
Wayne State University School of Medicine
Dr. Malleis grew up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, was raised by a single mother who taught her nine children the importance of bettering their community. In Grand Rapids, Boston, and Detroit, John volunteered in homeless shelters, public elementary schools, adult foster care homes and nursing homes. While earning his BA in Psychology from Harvard, he directed an outreach program sending undergraduates into the greater Boston community to volunteer as tutors and big siblings. After college, he spent several years traveling the US and Europe as a freelance event coordinator for General Motors Europe. Studying medicine in the heart of Detroit at Wayne State University, John loved meeting with people from all walks of life. Patient population and people who choose to serve it are wonderful. He appreciated working with them, and did his best to help and learn from them every day. John very much looks forward to continuing that education in Memphis. In his free time, John likes travel, hiking, camping, concerts, and cooking.
Kevin McKenzie, M.D.
University of Washington School of Medicine
Dr. McKenzie grew up in the beautiful Pacific Northwest and traveled to northern California for his undergraduate degree at Santa Clara University. However, his real education began in 2000 when he moved to Tanzania in East Africa to serve for two years as a US Peace Corps volunteer. Since that time, Kevin was privileged to live and work in numerous countries around the world including Kenya, Guinea, Thailand, Guatemala and Honduras, performing research or clinical work. His most recent research has been in the area of women’s health in HIV. He earned a Master’s degree in Public Health from Tulane University in New Orleans and attended the University of Washington for medical school. In addition to living abroad, Kevin enjoys learning foreign languages, jogging and keeping up with the latest world events.
Akram Mesleh-Shayeb, M.D.
University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine
Dr. Mesleh-Shayeb comes from a rich multicultural background. He was born in Colombia, raised in Puerto Rico and also has proud Palestinian roots. He graduated from the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus with a bachelor’s degree in Biology and a minor in Social Sciences, Economy. Loving the perfect island weather and beautiful beaches, he stayed in Puerto Rico where he attended medical school at the University of Puerto Rico, School of Medicine. His interests include transition, research, academics and hematology/oncology. He is very excited to move to Memphis, become part of UT and start enjoying the diverse food and music. In his spare time, he enjoys soccer, traveling around the world, watching movies and quality time with friends and family.
Katie Pegram, M.D.
University of Tennessee Health Science Center
Dr. Pegram was born and raised in Cumberland Furnace, TN where her family lives on a tobacco and cattle farm. She attended Yale University where she was a member of the varsity track team and earned a B.A. in the History of Science/History of Medicine. After college, she returned home to be closer to her family while she applied to medical school. Katie started medical school at UT in 2007 where she met her fiancé, Amerson, who was also a UT medical student and is now a UT Ophthalmology resident. They were engaged in the fall of 2010 and married in April of 2011, right before their med school graduation. They love living in Memphis but are both big family people and are eager to move back to middle TN after residency! In her spare time, Katie likes to run, bike, cook, read, and hang out with friends and family. She has done several medical mission trips and is interested in continuing working with underserved populations throughout her career.
Christina Samuel, M.D.
Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine
Don't be fooled by her roots! Tina may have been born in The Bronx but growing up in Lawrenceville, GA, she is a southern girl at heart. And being raised in a traditional South Indian home, she quickly learned to embrace two very different cultures. She went on to obtain a Bachelor’s in Biology from Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN, after which she pursued her medical education at the Medical College of Georgia. In the future, Tina looks forward to serving the people of India through medical missions. Aside from mission trips and traveling, she also enjoys spending time with family and friends, drawing/painting, playing the piano, and trying her hand at cooking!
Nancy Shinouda, M.D.
The Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University
Dr. Shinouda was born in Cairo, Egypt and at the age of eight relocated to Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. Nancy did not even know how to speak English when she arrived, but adapted quickly. She obtained her Bachelors of Science degree in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After graduating Nancy worked at Duke University in research. Shortly after, she was accepted into the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. Medical school was a long journey but Nancy is happy that part of her life is over and is ready to enjoy Memphis and new friends at UT. She at heart is a southern girl and did not want to leave it behind. Outside work, Nancy loves to spend time with friends and relax on the sofa while watching TV or a good movie.
Anna Winter, M.D.
University of Tennessee Health Science Center
Anna was born in good 'ole Memphis, Tennessee, but grew up not too far down I-40 in Jackson, TN. She attended Auburn University, home of the 2010 Football National Champs (WAR EAGLE!), where she majored in Spanish. Anna took a year educational hiatus after college to travel to China with Campus Crusade for Christ, where she lived for one year taking Mandarin classes, serving on college campuses, and traveling all over the Eastern Hemisphere! She then returned state side to tackle medical school at the University of Tennessee. She has a heart and passion for the Hispanic population and has enjoyed working at the student run clinic through UT, Clinica Esperanza, over the past 4 years. In her free time Anna likes to run, run, and run some more! She also enjoys hanging out with friends, traveling, and reading. She is looking forward to beginning her residency training here in Memphis!
