Affiliated Institutions

Our multiple affiliated institutions perform an exceptional combined number of autopsies (200 hospital and 500 forensic), frozen sections (6000), surgical pathology cases (200,000), cytopathology cases (120,000), bone marrow evaluations (500) and clinical laboratory tests (>10,000,000).

University Clinical Health (UCH) is a multispecialty practice group comprised of UTHSC faculty. UCH supports the clinical practice group for UTHSC pathology services as well as dermatopathology. UCH pathologists and laboratory scientists provide both AP and CP services to a number of affiliated healthcare institutions.

Methodist University Hospital (MUH) is the flagship adult hospital for UTHSC.  The hospital is a 600 bed adult acute care hospital with key services in the cancer and transplant areas. Pathology services are provided through the Memphis Pathology Group (MPG) whose members are also UTHSC faculty.  The MPG also provides services to the West Cancer Center, a UTHSC and Methodist Healthcare affiliated adult cancer care center.  The AP and CP laboratories at MUH are key rotation sites for our residents and fellows.

LeBonheur Children’s Hospital (LBCH) is the flagship pediatric hospital for Methodist Healthcare and UTHSC. Pathology services are provided through the LeBonheur Pathology Group (LBPG) whose members are also UTHSC faculty. The AP and CP laboratories are key rotation sites for our residents and fellows.

Regional One Health (ROH) is another acute care training site for UTHSC with over 300 staffed beds and associated primary care clinics. ROH houses many specialized services including a burn center, a level  1 trauma center, complex obstetrics, neonatology, and an HIV/AIDS special care unit. Pathology services are provided through UCH pathologists and scientists. The AP and CP laboratories are key rotation sites for our residents and fellows.

The Veteran’s Administration Medical Center (VAMC) is a full service regional center serving veterans in 53 counties in Tennessee, Arkansas, and Mississippi, and another essential training site for UTHSC. Pathology services are provided by VA pathologists who hold UTHSC faculty appointments.  The AP and CP laboratories are key rotation sites for our residents and fellows.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (SJCRH) is the premier research hospital for catastrophic childhood illnesses particularly cancer. UTHSC has a close working relationship with SJCRH, and many associates hold UTHSC faculty appointments. The facility is a very important training site for our residents and fellows, particularly in molecular pathology.

Baptist Memorial Hospital (BMH) is the flagship hospital for Baptist Memorial Healthcare, and offers an additional training site for UTHSC. It is a 700 bed acute care hospital with specialty services in cancer care and cardiology. Pathology services are provided by The Pathology Group of the Mid South (PGM) at Trumble Laboratories. The AP and CP laboratories are key rotation sites for our residents and fellows, and the pathologists generously dedicate a portion of their time to teaching UTHSC residents and fellows.

American Esoteric Laboratory (AEL) is a large regional reference laboratory which is a subsidiary of Sonic Healthcare. AEL offers AP services through a UCH partnership, and an extensive array of reference and esoteric clinical laboratory tests. AEL provides a unique opportunity to observe CP in a large volume and comprehensive reference laboratory setting. Pathologists hold UTHSC faculty appointments, and laboratory scientists generously dedicate a portion of their time to teaching.

Poplar Healthcare is a leading reference pathology laboratory with specialty expertise in a number of areas and is the professional home of many of our graduates.  The specialty services provide a unique training opportunity, and the pathologists generously dedicate a portion of their time to teaching UTHSC residents and fellows.

The Shelby County Health Department (SCHD) provides services to the citizens of Shelby County, and has an on-site public health laboratory offering key sexually transmitted infection (STI) and environmental testing services. The laboratory is directed by UTHSC faculty, and offers residents  a unique opportunity to observe public health laboratory medicine.

The West Tennessee Regional Forensic Center operates under an agreement with UTHSC and works with the Shelby County Medical Examiner’s Office to investigate sudden, unexpected and unnatural deaths, and serves as a resource for improving the public health and safety of the community. The center serves as a rotation site for residents and sponsors a forensic pathology fellowship.
