Definition of Trauma
Any life-threatening occurrence, either accidental or intentional, that causes injuries.- Trauma is the leading cause of death among Americans under 44 years of age,
surpassing cancer, heart disease, AIDS, and other diseases. - The leading causes of trauma are motor vehicle accidents, fails, and assaults. 1 out of every 3 people will be directly or indirectly affected by trauma.
- A trauma occurs every four seconds.
- U.S. healthcare institutions handle approximately 3 million trauma cases per year, with 150,000 trauma deaths annually.
Preventing Trauma
An estimated 35% of trauma deaths could have been averted with educational safety and prevention programs and through safe practices, such as always wearing a motorcycle or bicycle helmet, using seat belts, wearing life jackets, installing handrails and smoke detectors, etc.
