Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Michael Ulm attended Rhodes College for his undergraduate and went on to receive his Masters in Genetics at Tulane University. Following his time working in a lab at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Dr. Ulm decided to make a change. “I really loved the basic science component of my work at St. Jude, in addition to the molecular biology aspect,” said Dr. Ulm. “But it just wasn’t something I enjoyed as a whole as much as I thought I would. Following some volunteering, I realized I really liked the hospital – which led me to go back to school to get my Medical Degree.” Inspired by his experience at St. Jude, Dr. Ulm thought pediatric oncology was his future path; however, an opportunity on Obstetrics and Gynecology continued to catch his attention. “Even when I went into my residency, I didn’t think I would focus on Gynecologic Oncology,” said Dr. Ulm. “But, it was the rotation I got the most of out every year. From the patients to the surgeries, I felt like I could have the most impact in this field.”

Next year, Dr. Ulm will open a lab at the Cancer Research Building on the campus of UTHSC. Working with Todd Tillmanns, MD, FACOG, Larry Pfeffer, PhD, and Ramesh Narayanan, PhD, Dr. Ulm will assist in some research projects around ovarian cancer cell lines. In addition to his new laboratory pursuits, Dr. Ulm looks forward to continuing to focus on both patient education and health care disparities in his clinical practice. “This is a very exciting time for my education as well as the entire Fellowship Program,” said Dr. Ulm. “Between the laboratory research and continued growth in my clinical practice, we have the chance to really see – and do – everything at West Cancer Center.”
