Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine
The Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) Division at UTHSC is a multi-disciplinary team of physicians, nurses, sonographers, dieticians, pharmacists and psychologists with one main goal: taking care of pregnant women.
The division sees patients who are considered to be at-risk of complications during and preceding pregnancy, and immediately after birth.
One of the most successful practices in the university's health care system, the MFM Division covers all high-risk pregnancy care at Regional One Health, which includes around 4,000 deliveries per year. It also covers four other locations and has a referral base covering five states. Yearly, the division sees more than 12,000 high-risk patients.
The team performs the following procedures:
- High-level ultrasound with 4-D ultrasound capabilities (approximately 15,000 per year)
- Fetal echocardiograms
- First-trimester screening
- Prenatal diagnosis
- Genetic counseling
- In-utero interventions
- Cord blood samplings
The MFM team works to:
- Prevent congenital and adrenal hyperplasia
- Treat fetal arrhythmias
- Manage fetal anemia
- Perform amnioreduction
- Perform LASER therapy for twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS)
